What is Electronic Surface Brachytherapy?

Treating cancer using radiation therapy has been in practice for more than 70 years, but within the last few decades, innovations in medicine and science have improved not only the accuracy of the treatment but also the overall experience and risks for the patient.

Electronic Surface Brachytherapy works more effectively than traditional radiation isotopes by delivering low-radiation therapy at a high dosage rate through an applicator placed directly on the skin. The radiation is more controlled, requiring less shielding of the patient.

Whereas traditional radiation requires the treatment rooms to adhere to a strict set of guidelines, Electronic Surface Brachytherapy does not, allowing patients more access to effective cancer treatment.

How Does the Xoft® eBx® Work?

Offering improved targeting of the tumor site, the eBx® system uses a direct contact applicator and a flexible clamp, allowing the clinician to remain close to the patient during treatment. Due to faster dose fall-off, the healthy tissue adjacent to the tumor site is also less likely to be affected using this method of treatment.

Typically, a radiation oncologist and dermatologist work in tandem during Xoft® eBx® treatment, which can be done on an outpatient basis. The treated area is prepared with shielding to protect healthy surrounding tissues, then radiation is delivered for a few minutes.

The exact dosage and course of treatment will be determined on an individual basis, and can be discussed during your consultation with the medical team.
