Acne Treatment with Fractional Resurfacing

acne treatment

Fractional resurfacing, a type of laser resurfacing, is a treatment that dermatologists recommend for a variety of skin conditions. It offers outstanding results and a quick recovery time. Acne treatment with fractional resurfacing is growing in popularity due to the treatment’s ability to reduce the effects of scarring.

What Is Fractional Resurfacing?

In traditional laser resurfacing, a carbon dioxide (CO2) or erbium laser sends out high-energy light pulses that are absorbed by the moisture in your skin. The light transforms into heat, which essentially destroys very, very thin layers of skin. The treatment works well because new skin grows to replace that which the laser destroys, resulting in tighter, firmer, and often scar- or wrinkle-free skin. Fractional resurfacing treats only microscopic columns of skin and therefore offers a shorter recovery time with less scabbing and bleeding.

Who Is a Candidate?

Almost anyone is a candidate for acne treatment with fractional resurfacing. However, if you have skin or blood disorders, a history of abnormal scarring, a skin infection, or you have taken isotretinoin - a drug used to treat acne - in the last six to 12 months, you are not a good candidate for acne treatment with fractional resurfacing. What’s more, you should avoid this treatment if you have experienced adverse reactions to it in the past.

What Should You Expect?

One of our medical team members will mark areas of the skin with a pen. Then, he or she will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area and minimize any discomfort. You may need to wear goggles, and wet towels placed around the treatment area will absorb any stray pulses. Next, the laser passes across the treatment area and the doctor will wipe the skin with saline to keep the skin cool and remove tissue. Then, the area is covered with ointment and a clean dressing.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

Acne treatment with fractional resurfacing has a relatively short treatment time due to the minimal scabbing. You can experience some soreness after the anesthetic wears off; many patients report that it feels like a sunburn. Limit your use of scented soaps, lotions and perfumes, and be sure to avoid exposing your skin to the sun. Finally, make sure that you follow up with us, so that we can catch potential problems, such as infection, early.

Is Ongoing Maintenance Required?

In some cases, individuals may need more than one treatment before seeing optimal results. Those who have severe acne scarring may not see any results at all for several weeks after the treatment, and they may need to return for additional treatments once they have completely healed. However, for those with only mild scarring, a single treatment is often enough to make a world of difference.

Acne treatment with fractional resurfacing is by far the most precise way to reduce the appearance of scarring. At Doctors Approach, we’ll work with you to determine the most effective treatment plan for your skin and your needs.
