Mohs Surgery for Basal Cell Carcinoma

If you have been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, one of the most common forms of skin cancer, all you want to do is get rid of it. You want this monster to be taken out of your body before it does anything worse. While basal cell carcinoma is the least dangerous of the various forms of skin cancer, it does need to be addressed promptly. Otherwise, it could progress or change into a more dangerous form of skin cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma. You don’t ever want to leave any form of skin cancer unchecked. Mohs surgery is an effective way to treat basal cell carcinoma, and it has a high success rate.

What is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery is a highly precise procedure that involves freezing the top layer of a cancerous growth on the skin, taking away a thin section and sending it to the lab to be analyzed immediately for the presence of skin cancer cells. The process continues, addressing a layer at a time. It only involves treating the cells that have been affected by the basal cell carcinoma. As soon as a layer of healthy tissue is reached, the process is over. At that point, the treated area may be covered.

Why Choose Mohs Surgery?

Basal cell carcinoma typically affects the ears, nose, other areas of the face, neck and scalp due to exposure to the sun. While it can be addressed through excision or radiation, these methods may not always work. If you have a high recurrence rate of skin cancer in these areas, it may be time to consider Mohs surgery. Mohs surgery can offer you peace of mind because you will know immediately that your cancer has been treated. Since this method is so thorough, the skin cancer is less likely to come back. When other methods have failed, Mohs surgery could finally put you on the path to living a healthy life.
